18th Annual DJ Throwdown
March 5 - 7, 2009

DJ Throwdown began as a concept of the Association
of Beach and Shag Club DJ's during a general meeting in the summer of
1991. This meeting provided the format for a weekend party with multiple
DJ's to be held in Ocean
Drive, SC --free to the
public--a concept unheard of at the time! It was decided to present this
concept to all the club owners at SOS in September 1991. Not
surprisingly, all of the club owners said No! Except one, that being Mr.
Norfleet Jones, proprietor of Ducks at the time. He gladly accepted the
idea of a bunch of DJ's hosting a party at the beach. So DJ Throwdown was
born. The first one being held at Duck/Ducks Too in March 1992. When the
weekend finally approached, we had no idea if anyone would show up. But
show up they did, Ducks/Ducks Too was packed all weekend long.
Since
that weekend in 1992, Ducks/Ducks Too has been the home of DJ Throwdown.
Now with our newfound success it was decided to add an additional day to
DJ Throwdown. In March of 1993, we kicked off DJ Throwdown on Thursday
night with bands (with a small cover charge for this night only) and have
continued this format to this day. Many national Blues acts have
performed during DJ Throwdown such as the Nighthawks, Eddie Clearwater,
Mark Hummel, Roomful of Blues and Anson Funderburgh. In March of 2001, we
again changed the Thursday night format by asking the Fantastic Shakers
to be our DJ Throwdown house band. Together with the Shakers, The Embers,
The Band of Oz, The Craig Woolard Band and Johnny Barker have helped to
solidify the overwhelming success of Throwdown.
Each
year, DJ Throwdown is held at Ducks/Ducks Too during the first full
weekend in March. Throughout
the weekend you will hear over 40 DJ's from various regions of the
country. If you are a budding DJ or just a wanna-be, there are computer
courses throughout the weekend. The Richard Nixon DJ Memorial Award is
presented during the weekend to the DJ who has gone above and beyond the
call of duty. Inductions into the Beach Music Hall of Fame are also held
this weekend.
DJ Throwdown has now become the premiere party at
Ocean Drive (not including SOS) bringing thousands from many states to
dance, to hear new music, listen to bands and renew old friendships as
well as develop new ones. We sincerely hope that each of you will mark
your calendars and join the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ's for
this year's DJ Throwdown.
